A Preacher's Story by Paul Howlett

A Preacher’s Story by Paul Howlett

I heard this story from a travelling Gospel Preacher many years ago.

This Preacher was visiting a small church somewhere in Australia where he was to give the main address at the service that weekend.

He was staying with the local Pastor at his house.

The visiting Preacher was shown through a front gate by the Pastor, to be greeted by a friendly and very ugly female bulldog.

“Oh exclaimed,’’ The Preacher. “That is the ugliest dog I have seen in years, its name has to be Gertrude!”

The Pastor showed the Preacher through his front door and as they both walked into the kitchen, the Pastor introduced his wife to the Preacher.

“I would like you to meet Gertrude, my wife.”

The Preacher had to stay with them for the rest of the weekend.  I still think he is embarrassed!

Driving at Night by Paul Howlett

Driving at Night   by Paul Howlett

Homeward bound for daylights’ coming
Drive all night the stars are calling
Find the way through rain and fog
Find the way through mud and bog
Drive as fast as you dare
Large trucks are always looming
Ever nearer and to snare
You and your mighty motor
Bared and naked in their lights
Breathing down your exhaust pipe
Thundering past you at high speed
Frightening you with all their need
To be on time, to be there sooner
The traveling night trucks, today
Make for danger make for death
As they travel too fast, I say
In their all commercial quest!!

Words on the Page by Paul Howlett

Words on the Page by Paul Howlett

I’m thinking of writing
Many words on the page
Is it a novel, is it a book
My thoughts in a jumble
Don’t know where to look
Shall I start at the beginning
With lots of plot twists
My head is spinning
Around and around
Soon I will start
Get my feet on the ground
New ideas fill my mind
Fingers on the keyboard
The Zone has arrived
Light Bulb Moment
Hurray! I see my goal
Ten thousand words today
Finally, I have something to say

Alone at My Table by Paul Howlett

Alone at My Table    by Paul Howlett

All alone at my table
Looking for ghosts
The characters from fiction
Seem to fade in my beer
I am in a coffee shop of note
Surprised am I & I quote
When I surveyed the menu, here
To find lots and lots of beer
Some were good some were not
But find comfort in just one pot
Still it’s strange to find a place
A coffee shop by name
Sells booze all the same
I’ll raise a glass without any shame.

Note:  A ten ounce glass of beer in Queensland, Australia is called "A Pot".
In New South Wales, in Australia a ten oz beer is call "A Midi".
